Opposition supporters pray against "tyranny" without police obstruction

Opposition supporters have completed Friday's special prayer against "tyranny," without any obstruction from the Police.

The weekly prayers held outside the Islamic Center in Malé after Friday prayers are usually obstructed by police, with specialist operations officers using force and pepper spray to disperse the crowd of opposition supporters.

However today, as hundreds of opposition supporters prayed against "the tyranny of President Yameen's government" and for the safety of jailed and exiled opposition leaders, police did not attempt to disperse the crowd.

Last Friday, police arrested seven people who joined the weekly prayers after using force and pepper spray to disperse the crowd.

Out of the seven who were arrested and charged with obstruction of police duties, five opposition supporters were given a 15 day remand by the Criminal Court and two prayer-goers were released after the Court imposed a number of conditions, including a condition “to not pray at the Islamic Center.”

The two individuals who were conditioned "to not pray at the Islamic Center" are Galolhu South MP Ahmed Mahloof’s father and an employee at Ibrahim Nasir International Airport. Mahloof, spokesperson of the opposition coalition Maldives United Opposition, is currently serving a 10 month and 24 day jail sentence.

The opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has been holding a special weekly prayer for its leader Nasheed, since his arrest in February 2015.

After the first prayer, in which all the parties of the opposition alliance participated, Minister of Home Affairs Umar Naseer said that, “mosques and its surrounding prayer areas must not be used to make political statements.”
