President Abdulla Yameen has said that his government “will implement the death penalty despite the international pressure”.

The President made the statement in his address to the nation on the occasion of Eid-ul-Fitr on Tuesday.

Noting that there has been international pressure since the government decided to implement death sentence, President Yameen said that his government will not waver in its decision to implement the death sentence.
“We will do it for the people,” said the President.

He also noted that United Nations and other human rights group had also criticized the government after it announced that the Maldives as a 100% Muslim country.

Noting that the necessary preparations are being carried out in order to implement death penalty, President Yameen said that there are such things they need to do “to bring the youth onto the right path.”

Maldives Supreme Court recently upheld death sentences issued against two death row prisoners; Hussain Humaam, convicted for the murder of former MP, the late Dr. Afrasheem Ali and Ahmed Murrath, convicted of killing lawyer Ahmed Najeeb.

A number of international organizations, including the European Union and the United Nations have condemned the ruling and called on Maldives to uphold the unofficial moratorium on the death penalty.
