The Commonwealth Ministerial Action Group (CMAG) has always been the “Ministerial Inaction Group”: Ex-President Nasheed

The Commonwealth Ministerial Action Group (CMAG) has always been the “Ministerial Inaction Group”, former President Mohamed Nasheed has said.

Speaking to the Editor of The Round Table: The Commonwealth Journal of International Affairs regarding his view on the CMAG’s recent engagement with the Maldives, the former President said that the CMAG’s “idea is to find a way of not acting” against Member Countries which breach the Commonwealth principles.

He also insisted the Group must become “more proactive” if it is to succeed.

The CMAG had decided not to place Maldives on its formal agenda following its extraordinary meeting held on April 20, 2016.

Asked why his party had endorsed the findings of the Commission of National Inquiry (CoNI), which deemed the 2012 power transfer in Maldives “legal”, Nasheed said that he thought it would be better to form a new government with reformed institutions as called for in the CoNI report rather than reinstating his old government.

He also highlighted that although both sides had endorsed the UN and Commonwealth backed CoNI report, current government continues to neglect all other sections except the one on power transfer.

Remarking on the Commonwealth’s endorsement of the 2012 power transfer, Nasheed claimed that “anyone who saw TV that day would call the Commonwealth blind” as he was toppled in the “first televised coup in the Maldives”.

Nasheed, who is widely known as an international champion of climate change action, also accused the Yaameen regime of completely killing the carbon neutral policies of his government: “President Yaameen has decided to drill for oil and embark on every single fossil fuel project possible”.

In addition, he said that Maldives would no longer be able to capture the moral high ground after “they [the Yaameen administration] declared that they are going to increase the carbon emissions by 300 percent".
