State Dignitary Zahir Naseer buried as the nation mourns his passing

State Dignitary Mohamed Zahir Naseer, who passed away early this Wednesday morning, has been buried at Aasahara Mosque after today’s Asr prayer.

While the funeral prayer for Zahir Naseer was held after Asr prayer today at the Islamic Centre, the public was able to pay their last respects to the state dignitary at Aasaraa Mosque before the funeral prayer.

Zahir Naseer, lovingly known as the “father” of sport in the Maldives, passed away at the age of 87, at Maafannu Merry Gold on Wednesday morning. He had been battling an illness for a while, even missing this month’s Journalists’ Award where he had received the Maldives Media Council’s Lifetime Achievement Award, as he was abroad receiving medical treatment.

He is the founder of the Maldives Olympic Committee and had served as President of the Maldives Olympic Committee for close to 30 years, and had represented Maldives in various international sport arenas.

Zahir Naseer, who began his employment in the Government as Secretary to Foreign Counsel at the Ministry of Home Affairs, had served the nation for over 50 years. He had received the Honorary Shield for Invaluable Service to the Government; after having exceeded 50 years of service to the nation.

Zahir Naseer received the National Award of Recognition in 1979 and the National Award of Honor for Exceptional Contributions to the Development of Sport in Maldives in 1992.

The late State Dignitary was the editor of the first English newspaper "Morning Sun" and had ,made various contributions to the Maldivian journalism industry, even receiving the Golden Pen for Journalism.

He was also conferred the Order of Distinguished Rule of Izzuddeen in July 2011 by former President Mohamed Nasheed.

Following the news of his death, President Abdulla Yameen spoke with Zahir Naseer’s family by phone and extended his condolences, informed the President’s Office.

“The President also highlighted the late Mohamed Zahir Naseer’s innumerable and invaluable services to the Nation, the Government and the People of Maldives; especially in the area of Sports,” noted the Office.

Furthermore, the President has declared the Maldivian Flag be flown at half-mast, on 26th May 2016, as an observance of National mourning, in honor of the late State Dignitary.
