Police allow prayer for Nasheed after initial attempt to disperse crowd

Maldives Police Service (MPS) has allowed members of the opposition to pray for the safety of former President Mohamed Nasheed outside the Islamic Centre in capital city Male’ on Friday.

Although Specialist Operations (SO) police initially tried to block the opposition activists from praying at the area, they later backed away and allowed the prayer.

The police have been obstructing the prayer every Friday in the past couple of months.

Maldives Police Service had last year arrested the President of the Inguraidhoo branch on the Maldivian Democratic Party, Hassan ‘Hassantey’ Ahmed for leading the weekly prayer calling to free former President Mohamed Nasheed.

The Government maintains the prayer wishes ill on certain individuals and that “it violates the Religious Unity Act.”

The Ministry of Islamic Affairs had, on November 6, issued a statement saying that the opposition’s weekly prayer wishes ill on certain individuals and that action will be taken against those who continue to participate in this prayer.
