Maldivians forced to beg for necessities due to rampant corruption: Former STO MD Azim

Maldivians have been forced to beg for necessities because of the Government’s rampant corruption, former Managing Director of the State Trading Organization (STO), Adam Azim, has said.

Speaking on RaajjeTV’s ‘Fala Surukhee’ programme on Monday night, Azim claimed that the Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC)’s funds—allegedly stolen by senior figures of the Government—could have been used to provide free social housing and other necessities for the poor.

He also insisted that the Government’s current policy is to falsely portray Maldives as a “poor country” to use it as a pretext to avoid giving the people what they deserve.

According to the 2015 MMPRC Audit Report, over $64 million ($921 million) had “vanished” from the Corporation’s coffers from May 2014 to October 2015.

Some 60 cheques totaling $65 million that should have been deposited to MMPRC accounts had in fact been deposited into accounts of unrelated companies in violation of the MMPRC’s Board Resolution.

Former Vice President Ahmed Adheeb and former Managing Director of MMPRC Abdulla Ziyath are currently being prosecuted for their alleged role in the embezzlement of public funds.

Mohamed Allaam Latheef, who was also implicated in the crime 60 million dollar crime, has revealed that most of the stolen money was deposited into bank accounts belonging to the President and the First Lady.

Although the local anti-graft watchdog ‘Anti-Corruption Commission of Maldives’ had launched an investigation into the case last year, no progress has been made thus far.
