A group of journalists have on Friday held a march reiterating calls to speed up the investigation into the abduction of Ahmed Rilwan, a journalist at Maldives Independent.

The participants, who began the march in front Hulhumale’ Ferry Terminal in capital city Male’, had also gone to Hulhumale’, where the journalist was reportedly abduction.

Speaking to RaajjeMV during the march, Editor at Maldives Independent, Zaheenaa Rasheed said that the fact that police took a whole year to even acknowledge the abduction proved how flawed their investigation was.

In addition to calling on the authorities to speed up the investigation, the journalists signed a poster pledging to work towards ensuring justice for Rilwan.

Meanwhile, the Criminal Court had on Thursday extended the remand of the two individuals arrested in relation to the case by 10 days.

The remand hearing was held a few days after the High Court overturned the Criminal Court’s earlier ruling to transfer the suspects to house arrest.

The suspects—aged 29 and 31— were arrested on April 5 from Hulhumale’, the suburban district of capital city Male’, and Male’.

While the 31-year-old is Mohamed Nooradheen, the 29-year-old is Aalif Rauf, the younger brother of Azlif Rauf, who is a key suspect in Rilwan’s case.

Local media had recently reported that Azlif Rauf had died while fighting for a radical group, Bilad al-Sham in Syria.

Although it is rumoured that former Vice President Ahmed Adheeb had facilitated Azlif Rauf’s escape from Maldives, the Home Minister Umar Naseer had dismissed the allegations, claiming “there is no credible evidence to suggest a link between Adheeb and Rilwan’s abduction,”

During a press conference held late March, the police confirmed that Rilwan had been abducted after being followed by two individuals belonging to a gang in Male’.

The police also revealed that they had collected samples from a car seized in relation to the case, and that the DNA of a hair strand found in the trunk of the car matched with Rilwan’s mother's DNA.

Rilwan was last seen on CCTV footage on August 8, 2014, entering the Hulhumale' Ferry Terminal in Male'.
