The President has officially appointed the six new members of Maldives Broadcasting Commission to their posts on Tuesday.
The letters of appointment were handed over to them at a special ceremony held at the President’s Office earlier today.
The Parliament had on Monday approved six of the seven nominations for Maldives Broadcasting Commission (MBC) sent by the President.
The individuals appointed to the Commission are incumbent MBC President Mohamed Shaheeb of H.Reethigasdhoshuge, Zeena Zahir of Athireege, GDh.Gadhdhoo, Aminath Sahaarath Izzath, Galolhu Gofi, Fathmath Zaina of Huvandhumaage, Kaafu Dhiffushi, Ismail Safwaan of Fahala, Lhaviyani Fahala and Hassan Nabaah of Veronikaa, Kaafu Villingili.
Despite receiving the top marks from the Parliament’s Oversight Committee, Mariyam Waheeda’s nomination was rejected by 46 MPs present in the chamber.
Only 22 MPs had voted in her favour.
Many journalists and members of the public have expressed concern over the appointment of party activists to the media watchdog.
While both Fathmath Zaina and Zeena Zahir were recently seen at the campaign symposium held by First Lady Fathmath Ibrahim’s Office, Hassan Nabaah is a member of Majority Leader Nihan’s campaign team.
