Minister of Home Affairs Umar Naseer has said that they are unable to say whether former Vice President Ahmed Adeeb was involved in the abduction of journalist Ahmed Rilwan.

In an interview to local media, the Minister said that they have not received any evidence linking the former VP to the abduction.

Noting that they can confirm Adeeb’s involvement in the matter only after they get credible evidence, Umar said that they are looking into the matter due to unconfirmed reports linking him to the crime.

“We have to take responsibility for what we say. We can only confirm whether he was involved only if we get credible evidence,” said the Minister.

Noting that they have to take responsibility for what they say, Umar said that they cannot speak as some do on political podiums.

Umar said those who followed Rilwan prior to his abduction had been arrested earlier in the investigation, but was released after they were unable to prove the matter at court.

Speaking to the press on April 2, 603 days after Rilwan’s disappearance, Head of Serious and Organized Crime Abdulla Shatheeh confirmed that the journalist was followed prior to his disappearance, releasing footage of those believed to have followed him.
Rilwan was last seen on CCTV footage on the 8 August 2014, entering the Hulhumale' Ferry Terminal in Male'.

Rumours on Rilwan’s disappearance note that Rilwan had been working on a piece that uncovered the controversies surrounding Ungoofaaru MP Dr. Afrashim Ali’s murder.

Umar had previously said that the government has nothing to gain by abducting Rilwan, as “Rilwan was not well-known among the people.”

He further said that “the government had no interest in abducting Rilwan and keeping him in hiding,” and “no one should politicize Rilwan’s case.
