MCS gives ex-Minister Nazim 48 hours to return to Maldives

Maldives Correctional Service (MCS) has on Monday asked former Defence Minister Mohamed Nazim to cut short his medical trip and return to Maldives within 48 hours.

In a letter sent to Nazim’s wife Afaaf Abdul Majeed, Superintendent of Prisons, Ibrahim Mohamed Didi said that the MCS had decided to deny the request for an extension of Nazim’s medical leave, and warned the Service would “do whatever is necessary to bring him back” should he fail to return within the deadline.

This is the second time the Correctional Service has asked Nazim to return to Maldives, after its first order on April 1, 2016.

Nazim’s family has maintained that he would only return after the medical treatment is fully completed.

Former Defence Minister Mohamed Nazim’s legal team had recently revealed that they would appeal his conviction at the Supreme Court this week.

Speaking to RaajjeMV, member of Nazim’s legal team, Ali Zahir, said that there had been a delay in the appeal as the High Court had not given them the case reports on time. He also confirmed that the team had now received the necessary documents.

Last month, the High Court upheld the Criminal Court’s verdict on Nazim’s case.

Nazim was sentenced to 11 years in prison for the possession of illegal firearms by the Criminal Court on March 26, 2015.

The High Court ruling stated that there was no legal basis to overturn Nazim’s conviction as he had “failed to prove that the weapons found in Nazim's residence, G.Enif in January 2015 did not belong to him”.

Nazim had been the Defence Minister when Maldives Police Service raided his residence, in January 2015, and allegedly discovered a "browning 9mm pistol, 3 bullets, a magazine and an improvised explosive device." These were reportedly found with a pen drive which "implicated" Nazim, among others, in a plan to assassinate high profile government targets.

Nazim and his family have vigorously denied that the pistol found at his residence belonged to him and argued that the police had failed to prove any links between Nazim and the gun.
