The government of Maldives has, on Monday, less
than a day after extending the medical leave of former President Mohamed
Nasheed, terminated the medical leave extension.
On Monday, Minister of Home Affairs tweeted that the "medical leave extension granted to President Nasheed is now terminated as his lawyers confirmed that there is no surgery scheduled for him."
Speaking at a press conference on Monday, Commissioner of Prisons, Mohamed Husham said that they had decided to extend the former President's medical leave as the documents submitted by him stated that Nasheed was scheduled to undergo surgery on 19th April. He further said that they decided to terminate the extension, after Nasheed's lawyer denied that Nasheed will be undergoing surgery.
Speaking at a ceremony held in Gaaf Alif Gemanfushi on Sunday, the President had claimed that the Maldives Correctional Service (MCS) had received documents that stated that Nasheed would be admitted to hospital to undergo a surgery on April 19.
However, Nasheed's defense lawyer Hassan Latheef told RaajjeMV that this was a blatant lie and that no such documents had been sent to MCS.
“The documents sent to MCS were regarding the extension of Nasheed’s medical leave. There was no mention of a surgery in those documents”, he insisted.
Nasheed was initially granted medical leave on January 18, 2016. He is currently in the United Kingdom, where he is receiving the required medical attention.
Earlier in April, the government had ordered Nasheed to cut short his medical trip and return to Maldives, followed by a tweet by Minister of Home Affairs, Umar Naseer stating that "President Nasheed has been asked to return after he failed to submit proper medical records. He can still submit them and appeal for an extension."
