High Court overturns Criminal Court's decision on Rilwan case suspects

The High Court has on Thursday overturned the Criminal Court’s decision regarding the suspects in the case of the missing journalist Ahmed Rilwan, and ordered to remand them into custody.

The Criminal Court had recently ordered the suspects’ transfer to house arrest for 10 days.

The suspects—aged 29 and 31— were arrested on April 5 from Hulhumale’, the suburban district of capital city Male’, and Male’.

While the 31-year-old is Mohamed Nooradheen, the 29-year-old is Aalif Rauf, the younger brother of Azlif Rauf, who is a key suspect in Rilwan’s case.

Local media had recently reported that Azlif Rauf had died while fighting for a radical group, Bilad al-Sham in Syria.

Although it is rumoured that former Vice President Ahmed Adheeb had facilitated Azlif Rauf’s escape from Maldives, the Home Minister Umar Naseer had dismissed the allegations, claiming “there is no credible evidence to suggest a link between Adheeb and Rilwan’s abduction,”

During a press conference held late March, the police confirmed that Rilwan had been abducted after being followed by two individuals belonging to a gang in Male’.

The police also revealed that they had collected samples from a car seized in relation to the case, and that the DNA of a hair strand found in the trunk of the car matched with Rilwan’s mother's DNA.

Rilwan was last seen on CCTV footage on August 8, 2014, entering the Hulhumale' Ferry Terminal in Male'.

It has been reported that at the time of Rilwan’s abduction, he was working on a piece that uncovered the controversies surrounding Ungoofaaru MP Dr. Afrashim Ali’s murder.

Apart from this, the Home Minister recently accused local journalists of trying to “politicize” Rilwan’s abduction by blaming the incident on the Government.

He is reported to have said, “Rilwan was not even a well-known journalist. The Government has nothing to gain by abducting him,”
