Former President Mohamed Nasheed has, on Tuesday,
called on authorities to drop the criminal charges against RaajjeTV COO
Hussain Fiyaz Moosa and journalists Mohamed Wisam and Leevaan Ali
Naseer.
The former President made the comments via his official twitter account.
Noting that "journalists must be allowed to work without fear and intimidation," Nasheed emphasized that the "criminal charges against Mohamed Wisam, Leevaan Ali Nasir and Hussain Fiyaz Moosa must be dropped."
Nasheed, who was a journalist, would understand the fear among local journalists, as he was held in prison because of an article 1991, which alleged the government had rigged the 1989 General election. He was also named an Amnesty International prisoner of conscience in 1991
The former President will speak- on the role of journalists in maintaining a democracy and promoting good governance, and how importance it is for Commonwealth member countries to ensure the freedom of press - at a special function at the 10th Conference of the Commonwealth Journalists Association.on Tuesday night.
RaajjeTV COO Fiyaz and sport journalists Leevaan Ali Nasir are being charged over an arrest on 3rd November 2015, when they, along with journalist Mohamed Wisam were arrested while covering a bomb scare in Malé City.
Wisam was also charged with two counts of obstructing police work. The two charges include a charge of obstructing the duties of a staff of the state and one charge of obstructing the duties of police.
Wisam's second charge is over an arrest on March 25, 2015 during an opposition rally.
Both Wisam and Leevaan were also among the 16 journalists that were arrested during the press freedom protest on April 3.
This is the first time Maldives has charged a journalist who was arrested while doing his job, since the democratic elections of 2008.
