Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP)’s Chairperson
Ali Waheed has leaked an audio of a conversation between President
Yaameen Abdul Qayyoom and then Tourism Minister Ahmed Adheeb, which
reveals that Yaameen attempted to influence the 2013 presidential
elections through the judiciary.
In the leaked audio, President Yaameen is heard telling Adheeb to expedite “the urgent business” via “kalhu kujjaa”— a code name for a judge at the Supreme Court.
In response, Adheeb is heard informing Yaameen that the judge had agreed to “do what is necessary” after “negotiating a deal with the Attorney General”.
At the time of the conversation, the Attorney General of Maldives was Uza. Aishath Azima Shukoor, who is currently the Legal Affairs Minister at the President’s Office.

Ali Waheed had also publicized a similar audio clip on March 9.
The said audio of a conversation between former Kaashidhoo constituency MP Abdulla Jabir and former Vice President Ahmed Adeeb, implicates President Yaameen in a bribery scandal.
In the audio clip leaked on March 9, Jabir is heard telling then Tourism Minister Adheeb that President Yaameen had asked for MVR15 million in return for influencing the former parliamentarian’s court case.
Jabir had also noted that he had already given MVR6 million to Yameen prior to that as well.
Last year, then Chief Judge of Criminal Court Abdulla Mohamed had also been caught entering President Yaameen’s private residence late at night.
Neither the President’s Office nor the Criminal Court has commented on the matter thus far.
