Ali Waheed claims offer to include Nasheed in all-party talks is an attempt to hoodwink CMAG

The Government must free all political prisoners instead of offering to hold talks with hostages to hoodwink the Commonwealth Ministerial Action Group (CMAG), Maldivian Democratic Party’s Chairperson Ali Waheed has said.

Ali Waheed also said that such acts of deceit only proved the insincerity of the Government.
Minister of Fisheries and Agriculture Dr.Mohamed Shainee had, on Sunday, revealed that the government is willing to discuss including leader of Maldivian Democratic Party, former President Mohamed Nasheed and Adhaalath Party leader Sheikh Imran Abdulla in the multi-party talks.

He also noted that neither Nasheed nor Imran is currently in jail. Nasheed is in the United Kingdom on medical leave, while Imran was transferred to house arrest due to "maintenance" at Himmafushi Asseyri Prison.

Speaking at a press conference held at the President's Office, Shainee noted that a five member delegation from United Nations, led by Senior Advisor at the Political Affairs Department Tamrat Samuel, are currently in Maldives to assist in re-starting political party talks.

Highlighting that Sameul is experienced in such matters, having carried out similar tasks for the UN in other countries, Shainee said that they have hope in the UN delegation and that "the government will provide necessary support."

While the UN delegation, who will also meet with the opposition, will be advising the government, Shainee emphasized that they will "not meddle in our domestic matters."

Prior to the arrival of the UN delegations, Deputy Secretary General of the Commonwealth, Dr. Josephine Ojiambo had visited Maldives and met with representatives from the government as well as the opposition.

MDP and AP maintain that they will only join the talks after the government frees all jailed political leaders, and provides a conducive environment for talks.
