President Yaameen Abdul Qayyoom will go down in history as one of the most brutal rulers of the country, MP for South Hithadhoo constituency Ali Nizar has said.

Speaking on RaajjeTV’s ‘Fala Surukhee’ programme, Wednesday night, MP Nizar also insisted that majority of Maldivians saw President Yaameen as “a thief who looted the state coffers”.

Highlighting that the amount of money stolen in the Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC) corruption scandal was unprecedented in the country’s history, MP Nizar said President Yaameen had not just stolen public funds, but also the future of the younger generations.

In an earlier interview with RaajjeTV, Nizar had said President Yaameen’s claim that he was unaware of the largest corruption scandal in the country’s history until recently was an insult to the Maldivian people’s intelligence.

Nizar’s party, the MDP, had on February 4, revealed that it had received a report of a covert intelligence operation carried out within the Maldives and at various locations overseas.

In a statement released last week, the party highlighted that the said investigation was carried out by an intelligence organization, and was based on direct interviews with current and former officials, and others associated with President Yameen’s regime. The party also claimed that the aim of the investigation was to uncover evidence of money laundering and terrorist financing directly and indirectly associated with the current regime. In addition to individual sources, the dossier reportedly contains photographs, financial transaction records, detailed email exchanges proving impropriety and financial instruments such as cheques.
