Deputy Chairperson of the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has been released on Thursday.

Shifaz was released without being taken to Court, after his initial remand period expired.

Shifaz was arrested on February 29, in front of the Justice Building on Fareedhee Magu.

Dozens of MDP supporters had gathered in front of the Justice Building to express their solidarity with the 15 individuals being prosecuted over a protest at Ibrahim Nasir International Airport in March 2015.

According to Maldives Police Service, Shifaz was arrested for disobeying the police.

MDP had condemned Shifaz's arrest, saying that Shifaz’s arrest had made it abundantly clear to the world that the Maldivian government was never really willing to engage in dialogue with the opposition, and that its invitation for political party talks was just an attempt to hoodwink the international community.

Following Shifaz's arrest, former President Mohamed Nasheed said that "President Abdulla Yameen's arrest of MDP's VP Shifaz highlights his [President Yameen's] government's insincere call for political dialogue, [it] was just an attempt to mislead the CMAG and UN."
