Jailed former President Mohamed Nasheed’s release should come with the assurance that he would be able to contest the 2018 presidential elections, Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP)’s Chairperson Ali Waheed has said.

In a series of tweets posted on Monday, Ali Waheed called on the Yaameen regime to stop attempting to hoodwink the public through corrupt judges, and insisted all political leaders, including former Vice President Adheeb, former Defence Minister Nazim and Adhaalath Party Leader Sheikh Imran Abdulla, should be released along with Nasheed.

Ali Waheed is currently in self-imposed exile in the United Kingdom, after leaving the country following his arrest on May Day last year.

In the past few months, Ali Waheed had also leaked several documents implicating President Yaameen and the First Lady in corruption and money laundering.

In this regard, the Chairperson of the country’s largest political party, publicized a number of cheques belonging to the Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC), which had been deposited to personal accounts of the first couple.

In addition, the MDP has boycotted the ongoing all-party talks after insisting that they would not engage in any dialogue before the release of all political prisoners.
