The Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has condemned the obstruction of its ‘Vakkan Yageen’ anti-corruption protest by the Maldives Police Service on Friday.

In a statement released by the party on Saturday, it noted that the arrest of MP for South Galolhu constituency Ahmed Mahloof, the pepper-spraying of several protesters and the general obstruction of the party’s protest were in violation of the Constitution, which guarantees the right to freedom of expression and assembly.

The party also highlighted that the court order obtained to confiscate a sound system from Machchangoalhi Maadheli (Lecute Building) prior to the protest, in anticipation of it being used during the protest, undermined the criminal justice system of the Maldives.

In addition, the MDP claimed that police officers had obstructed and pepper-sprayed protesters while trying to return to their homes after the end of the protest around 6.15pm yesterday.

The MDP further expressed concern over the violation of the sanctity of the Jalaaluddeen Mosque by police officers who entered the premises in boots in order to arrest MP Mahloof.
