Maldives Surfing Association (MSA) has revealed
that they will be holding the “Save Our Waves” protest from 4pm till 6pm
today as well.
In a tweet posted by the Association’s ‘Save Our Wave’ campaign handle, the association said that concerned surfers will be reaching out to the public to explain to them the importance of protecting Varunulaa Raalhugandu – one of Maldives’ best surf breaks.
Earlier this week, Maldives Police Service arrested twelve surfers, including a minor, for allegedly obstructing construction work related to the development of the China-Maldives Friendship Bridge.
While the police released eleven surfers after holding them in custody for twenty four hours, the Criminal Court ordered a five-day remand for the President of the Maldives Surfing Association, Ahmed ‘Ajey’ Aznil.
Those released on Monday night also include bodyboarding champion Ali Khushruwan.
Criminal Court has, on Tuesday, ordered a five day remand for the President of the Maldives Surfing Association Ahmed 'Ajey' Aznil.
Local surfers began protesting against the Government’s bridge project after learning of the government’s decision to artificially alter the popular surfing spot that will have an impact on the waves at the area.
The surfers told RaajjeMV that while there was a no admittance sign in the area, "there are no boards saying we [surfers] are prohibited from getting into the sea."
Some of the surfers noted that the government could have offered them an alternative so that "we [surfers] can keep the sport alive."
They also stressed that none of the surfers, including MSA President Aznil, had broken any rules and that they were arrested while protesting peacefully.
