Leaked audio clip between former Kaashidhoo constituency
MP Abdulla Jabir and former vice President Ahmed Adeeb shows that
President Abdulla Yameen had taken bribes to influence the judiciary.
In the audio clip leaked by MDP Chairperson Ali Waheed on RaajjeTV's Fala Surukhee program on Sunday, it is believed that both parties were speaking about the trial that ensued after Jabir declined to provide a urine sample to the Maldives Police Service.
In the audio which is over nine minutes long, Jabir talks about how President Yameen had told him that he required about MVR 15 million and that he has withdrawn the amount and kept it in his safe.
Jabir also noted that he had given MVR six million to President Yameen prior to that as well.
Jabir, who has been a close ally of President Yameen, said that Yameen had asked him to talk to Adeeb about the matter, to which Adeeb replied that he will work on the matter immediately, as Jabir has never made such a request previously.
In the leaked clip, Jabir is heard asking Adeeb, "Yameen asked me to call you [Adeeb], Adeeb is my brother, my lover. Why does Yameen love you so much? I think he respects you a lot. Probably because you, without any questions, have been working to bring the "achievement" he talks about?"
Adeeb is heard replying that it is because he puts in the work.
Jabir then tells Adeeb that he has the money that President Yameen required and that he does not care about who comes into power, but that he did not want (then) Police Commissioner Abdulla Riyaz or (then Defence Minister) Mohamed Nazim running after him and asked Adeeb to solve it for him.
He is also heard asking the price for a solution, noting that neither he nor his wanted him to go to prison. He also said that when he mentioned that he might be sent to prison, President Yameen had said that that will not happen and asked Adeeb to tell (then) Criminal Court Chief Judge Abdulla Mohamed to stop harassing him.
Furthermore, Jabir is heard telling Adeeb that he had been told not to talk to his runningmate Mohamed Jameel Ahmed on the matter, and to go straight to the Tourism Minister.
Jabir was arrested along with other high profile MDP members on suspicion that they were in possession and under the influence of alcohol and cannabis, at Jabir’s uninhabited island, Hondaidhoo in Haa Alifu Atoll on the 16 of November, 2012.
At the time of the trial Adeeb was the Minister of Tourism.
In February 2014, Criminal Court had found Jabir guilty of declining to provide a urine sample and had taken the MP into custody and was sentenced to one year in jail, only to be pardoned by President Yameen.
In July 2014, President Yameen pardoned the former parliamentarian.
