Erosion of the rule of law seen in the Maldives: U.S. State Department

Sri Lanka’s exemplary journey towards democratic consolidation is in sharp contrast to the largely negative trajectory of Maldives, Assistant Secretary at United States’ Bureau of South and Central Asian Affairs, Nisha Biswal has said.

Speaking at the Washington’s Center for a New American Security on Monday, the Assistant Secretary said that while Sri Lanka deserves special attention as it continues to consolidate democratic gains in the past two elections and put the country on a path to reconciliation, its neighbour, the Maldives, is currently experiencing a democratic reversal.

She further highlighted “a steady weakening of its fragile democracy and an erosion of the rule of law” is being seen in the tiny island nation.

“Opposition politicians remain behind bars simply because they gave voice to their views, and because the government’s skin is too thin to brook any criticism or competition,”
In her speech, Ms.Biswal also noted that such dictatorial tactics are short-sighted and counterproductive, and urged the Government to return to the democratic practices that will best ensure its future success, economic and otherwise.
