Purpose of criminalising defamation is to instill fear in the hearts of the people: MP Falaah

The purpose of criminalizing defamation is to instill fear in the hearts of the people, and ensure they do not speak of the grand corruption of the Yaameen regime, MP for South Maafannu constituency Mohamed Falaah has said.

Speaking on RaajjeTV’s ‘Fala Suruhee’ programme on Thursday, Falah said that Yaameen is extremely disturbed by the exposure of his role in the Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC), and insisted his next move will be to criminalise defamation and prevent people from speaking the truth.

The Deputy Leader of the ruling Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM), MP Riyaz Rasheed, had on Thursday said that additional prisons should be built, especially for members of the Maldivian Democratic Party, once defamation is criminalized in the Maldives.

In a tweet posted yesterday, MP Riyaz Rasheed claimed that the Maldivian Democratic Party would vanish off the face of earth if defamation is made a criminal offence in the Maldives as “the party’s whole campaign strategy is based on character assassination”.

The outspoken parliamentarian’s comments came just one day after President Yaameen Abdulla Qayyoom signaled that he would be sending an amendment criminalizing defamation in the Maldives to the Parliament next week.

Speaking at a ceremony held on Wednesday to inaugurate the ‘Fiyavathi’ orphanage in Hulhumale’—donated by a businessman from the United Arab Emirates (UAE)—, the President said “a person’s reputation is his most precious, treasured right” and insisted “those who defame others should be held accountable as much as a thief who steals our money”.

Responding to the President’s remarks, the Spokesperson of the MDP, MP Imthiyaz Fahmy said the attempt to criminalise defamation in the Maldives is aimed at restricting freedom of expression, and highlighted that it was a part of the regime’s meticulous plan “to seal the lips of those who dare to expose the Government’s wide-scale corruption”.

He further added “with such amendment, Maldives will soon revert to the dire situation it was in the 1980s”.
