Former President Mohamed Nasheed was charged with terrorism on the
direct orders of President Abdulla Yameen, says the office of the former
president.
In a statement, Nasheed’s office said the three state powers are separated under the constitution.
Independent institutions must function impartially and without influence of the executive power, the statement said.
“This office has received confidential information that the charges presses as per clause 81 of the penal code were dropped and fresh terror charges were pressed against Nasheed on the direct orders of President Yameen to the Prosecutor General.”
The office of the former President stated the Prosecutor General and the judiciary must not be influenced when carrying out duties mentioned in the constitution.
“As the charges pressed against Nasheed cannot be accepted as valid, the 13 year prison term is also invalid and Nasheed must be immediately freed.”
