The Improvised Explosive Device that caused the explosion
aboard the presidential speedboat ‘Finifenmaa’ was prepared on the
direct instruction of former Vice President Ahmed Adheeb, Home Minister
Umar Naseer has revealed.
In a press conference held by the Commission of National Inquiry set up to probe into the boat blast, Umar Naseer said the commission had received reliable information that the IED was prepared inside the former Vice President’s apartment in Rehendhi Residency.
He also claimed that Adheeb had instructed to prepare an IED strong enough to sink a large speedboat.
Furthermore, Umar claimed that Adheeb had taken the presidential speedboat to Aarah Island just one day prior to the blast, and noted the former Vice President had chosen the ‘Finifenmaa’ speedboat despite having access to several other vessels for transport.
In today’s press conference, the Home Minister also said that the commission is currently investigating if there is any link between the presidential speedboat blast and the fire incident involving a Gulf-craft boat carrying tourists a few months back.
In addition, Umar Naseer refuted claims by the Sri Lankan government that the case against the “Sri Lankan sniper” is weak, and maintained that the commission had obtained physical evidence strong enough to convict him.
“The sniper was brought to assassinate the President, and he was given precise instructions, including information on the route taken by the President”, the Home Minister said.
RaajjeMV had, on February 23, reported that an MNDF officer arrested in relation to the explosion aboard the presidential speedboat had recently confessed that in addition to making an IED to harm the President, he had also previously made another IED to denote during the May Day protest.
According to a reliable source, during the police investigation, member of the MNDF Explosive Ordinance Department, Mohamed Jawaaz, also revealed President Yaameen was aware of the plan to detonate an IED during the May Day protest.
Furthermore, Jawaaz elaborated that the plan was to detonate the IED at a remote location inside former Police Commissioner Hussain Waheed’s car in a way no individual would be hurt.
The MNDF officer also claimed that upon returning MVR1 million deposited into his account by former Vice President Ahmed Adheeb and former Police Commissioner Hussain Waheed as a bribe, a notorious gang threatened him, and set ablaze his motorbike.
RaajjeMV understands that in Jawaaz’s confession, he admitted that he had prepared an IED in former Vice President Adheeb’s apartment in Rehendhi Residency upon Adheeb’s request.
In addition, he stated that some materials used to prepare the IED were found with the arms cache discovered at Baa Hinbalhidhoo island last year.
Based on Jawaaz’s confession, Maldives Police Service is now set to send cases against Adheeb’s personal security officers Sergeant Ahmed Rikaaz and Ishaag Ahmed for prosecution.
Rikaaz is the younger brother of State Minister at the President’s Office, Mohamed Mujthaaz.
