Police blocked another opposition protest slated for Friday evening in capital Male.
Opposition
Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) had asked its supporters to gather at
the intersection between Fareedhee Magu and Chaandhanee Magu near
Seagull Café House at 4pm Friday.
In a statement, police said the party had been ordered in a letter and via an SMS to not hold the protest at the intersection. The order was relayed as the area is frequented by tourists as well people, including children, especially during the weekend, they added.
“If the gathering is held at the location, several roads adjacent to Seagull should be closed down for several hours, posing major difficulties to owners of businesses in the area and all those who visit the place for other purposes as well,” the statement read.
According to the police, the order was made under the Freedom of Assembly Act.
The police’s order follows a series of recent similar restrictions on protests held by the opposition.
Earlier this month, police moved quickly to restrict an opposition led anti-corruption march to the Artificial Beach area on the eastern end of capital Male.
