Criminal Court Judge Abdul Baaree Yousuf’s wife had been summoned to the Anti-Corruption Commission of Maldives for questioning on Saturday.

According to a reliable source, she was summoned regarding a case submitted by a private individual accusing the judge of accepting MVR500,000 in bribes for releasing Hassan Yousuf— an individual suspected of running a local drug cartel.

In a letter sent to the Anti-Corruption Commission, the complainant claimed that the Rehendhi Residences apartment owned by Judge Baaree was “gifted” to him by local businessman Mohamed Moosaa (Champaa Uchchu) and former Vice President Ahmed Adheeb.

It has also been reported that Judge Baaree had paid MVR900,000 in bulk as payment for his apartment at the Rehendhi Residences.

Except for Baaree, all the judges on the bench that presided over former President Mohamed Nasheed’s case have been promoted to higher posts.

In this regard, on January 8, Abdullah Didi, one of the three judges who presided over Nasheed’s case was elected as the chief judge of the High Court.

Didi was elected as Chief Judge in a vote taken by the Judicial Services Commission last year.

Judges Abdulla Didi and Shujau Usman were appointed as High Court Judges just a few months after Nasheed’s sentencing.

Judges Abdulla Didi and Shujau Usman took the vacated seats of retired High Court Judge Yoosuf Hussain and Senior Judge Ahmed Shareef, who was demoted to the Juvenile Court regarding an ethical issue.

Until their appointment to High Court, both judges were on the bench presiding over the terrorism cases against leader of Adhaalath Party (AP) Sheikh Imran Abdulla, Deputy leader of Jumhooree Party (JP) Ameen Ibrahim and JP Foreign and Public Affairs Executive Sobah Rasheed.
