The International Democrat Union (IDU) expresses concern at the political situation in the Maldives, and said that its members support call for targeted travel bans and foreign asset freezes to be imposed on select individuals who have perpetuated human rights abuses.

IDU released a statement on Monday, following a meeting of its Executive Committee in Sri Lanka on February 26, stating that it "reiterates its support for the call by [former] President [Mohamed] Nasheed’s legal team for targeted travel bans and foreign asset freezes to be imposed on select individuals who have perpetuated human rights abuses."

IDU noted that it is concerned at the political situation in the Maldives, "regarding the increasing intensity with which President Yameen Abdul Gayoom cracks down on political opponents and human rights defenders through the use of courts and other institutions which he controls, and the expansion of terrorism."

Expressing concern over the allegations of corruption and money laundering against the Maldivian government, IDU called "for an immediate and credible inquiry to address public and international concerns."

The statement also highlighted "the harassment of media and civil society and the lack of political space for the political opposition, the increasing politicization of the judiciary and the lack of independence for democratic institutions."

IDU further called on the Maldivian government to immediately and unconditionally release all political prisoners, including political party leaders, "as a gesture of sincerity so that a meaningful political dialogue can take place."

It also called on the United Nations " to reengage in the Maldives in order to assist the country in returning to democracy and the rule of law."

While IDU welcomed the government's decision to allow President Nasheed to travel and the invitation to political dialogue, it called "on the Maldivian authorities to review the sentence imposed on President Nasheed so that he may return to the country without again risking arbitrary detention."
