Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM) has confirmed that they are not looking into the case where opposition MP Rozaina Adam was harassed by Majority Leader of the Parliament, Ahmed Nihan Hussain Manik.

Speaking to RaajjeMV, an official from the HRCM said they are not looking into the matter as the case has not been submitted to the commission by any individual or group thus far.

The HRCM, however, has the mandate to launch investigations proprio motu.

While the local human rights watchdog has not reacted to the incident, South Asians for Human Rights (SAHR), a regional network of human rights defenders, has recently condemned Nihan’s attack on opposition MP Rozaina Adam.

In a statement released on Friday, the SAHR said it finds it "equally regrettable that the Speaker of Parliament took no notice of the incident and continued the Parliamentary proceedings".

"The Speaker thus seemed to endorse a highly reprehensible act of the Majority Leader," the statement read.

The SAHR also expressed concern over the complaints that female MPs in the Maldives have been physically attacked on a number of occasions inside the Parliament and have been threatened to be raped by fellow male MPs.

In its statement, the network called on the Speaker of Parliament, Abdulla Maseeh Mohamed, and other relevant authorities to "take immediate steps towards an impartial investigation into the incident and to ensure proper reparations are made to the female MP,"

On February 25, the Majority Leader of the Parliament was seen taking a sip from a glass filled with water, only to spit the mouthful of water onto MP Rozaina's face.
