Former PresidentPresident Mohamed Nasheed has, on Thursday, reiterated that he would not let Maldives revert into a dictatorship, and assured the public that he, and his party, would return to establish good governance in the Maldives soon.

Addressing the nation for the first time since his arrest in February last year, the former President accused the Government of misappropriating public funds, and said “more than 50 islands and endless 500 notes have been stolen”.

Severely criticizing the relocation of citizens under the Government’s policy of population consolidation, the former President highlighted there was no country without “small populations”, and insisted “the lagoons and beaches, the palm trees and the seas belong to Maldivians and Maldivians alone”.

He also gave hope to his supporters saying “it is always darkest before the dawn. And according to the laws of nature, a brighter tomorrow shall appear before us”.

Nasheed, who has been sentenced to 13 years in prison, is currently in the United Kingdom on a medical leave brokered by India, Sri Lanka and the United Kingdom.

The Maldivian government had recently criticised jailed former President Mohamed Nasheed for "exploiting the terms of a 30-day medical release to embark on a lobbying and media campaign abroad."

A statement released by the Minister of Foreign Affairs on Monday said that "Nasheed has politicised medical leave trip to UK," and that multiple engagements show former President has been ‘disingenuous at best and misleading at worst’ about his medical condition.

"The Government also notes its profound disappointment that a member of its London High Commission was denied entry to Nasheed’s forthcoming London Press Conference by his American PR team, despite a request many days in advance. This is in stark contrast to the unimpeded access given to the press conferences of Mrs Amal Clooney and Mr Nasheed’s US advisers during their last visit to the Maldives," the statement read.
