former president Mohamed Nasheed met with Commonwealth chief Monday, as
the opposition leader continues his government-sanctioned trip to the
United Kingdom for medical treatment.
The British-educated human rights activist became the first
democratically-elected president of the Maldives in 2008 and served for
three years before he was ousted in what he called a coup backed by the
military and police.
Last year, he was sentenced to 13 years in jail on terrorism charges.
Nasheed announced his meeting with the Commonwealth Secretary General Kamalesh Sharma in a tweet Monday afternoon. A picture posted with the tweet showed him accompanied by his wife Laila Ali and his opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) chairperson Ali Waheed.
Details of the meeting were, however, not disclosed.
Maldives and Commonwealth have been at odds lately with the 53-member organisation criticising the government for recent political developments, including the jailing of Nasheed and several opposition political figures.
In the latest development, Commonwealth had led international condemnation of the Maldives after it declared a month-long state of emergency in November following two assassination attempts on the president.
