The European Union Ambassador to Sri Lanka and Maldives, David Daly has said that the conviction of Maldivian politicians without due process, including former President Mohamed Nasheed, former Defence Minister Nazim, and Adhaalath Party Leader Sheikh Imran is a “very bad trend for Maldives”.

In a tweet posted on February 20, Ambassador Daly revealed that he had met with the Maldivian Foreign Secretary Dr.Ali Naseer to discuss the need for “urgent judicial reform” and “genuine political dialogue” in Maldives.

The Ambassador also mentioned that the Foreign Secretary had agreed with the main concerns raised by him.

Recently, a delegation from the European Parliament had also arrived in Maldives on a fact-finding mission.

In a press conference held on February 9, the delegation highlighted that this was the fifth visit of the European Parliament to Maldives, and said that they had held discussions with almost all the local stakeholders including the Government, members of the Opposition as well as “a cross section of parliamentarians”.

Noting “imprisonment of politicians seems to be a very common occurrence in the Maldives these days”, the delegation also revealed that it had, on Monday, visited a nearby prison to observe the situation up close.

Furthermore, the MEPs emphasized the seriousness of the European Parliament Resolution on Maldives passed last November, and stated that they had made an up-to-date assessment of the Maldives, which will be taken into account when the European Parliament follows up on its Resolution soon.
