All Party talks: Gov't says MDP and AP to join, both parties say otherwise

After the government announced the dates for the first session of multi-party talks, opposition MDP and AP reveal that they have not decided to join the talks.

Revealing that the first session of the political party talks is scheduled for March 2, Fisheries Minister Dr. Mohamed Shainee said that all parties, including MDP and AP, had agreed to join the talks.

However, in a joint press conference on Wednesday, MDP's Chairpersom Mohamed Shifaz revealed that there has been no change to MDP and AP's decision regarding the party talks.

Last week, the parties had announced their decision to boycott the talks, stating that "the government had not established a conductive environment for talks," after the government rejected one of its conditions, the release of their leaders.

Noting that government officials had announced that MDP and AP will be joining the talks, Shifaz said this is done "in order to deceive the people and the international community."

Shainee, at today's press conference, had said that the government had received official documents confirming their decision to join the talks, claiming that "there were no pre-conditions mentioned in their respective letters."

MDP leader and former President Mohamed Nasheed has since tweeted, via his official twitter account, that "the Maldivian Democratic Party [MDP] has not decided to take part in all party talks."
