PPM Parliamentary Group will seek a no confidence vote
against President Yaameen if he releases the former President Nasheed,
MP for Kelaa Constituency, Ali Arif has said.
Speaking at a ruling party rally held at HA.Kelaa, Ali Arif said that even the President did not have the authority to “release criminals outside the boundaries of law”.
Arif proudly claimed that the PPM Parliamentary Group was bold enough to pursue a no confidence motion against the President, if he violated the Constitution.
Labelling the former President as a “high level criminal”, Arif said that if Nasheed were to be freed, all other prisoners must be released along with him to “ensure fairness”.
MP for Thimarafushi, Ahmed Musthafa, had praised Ali Arif’s “courage”, and urged the rest of the parliamentarians to follow suit.
“We must all remember that we are parliamentarians. We need not be puppets”, Musthafa said.
The former Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ahmed Naseem, has however said that Arif would now be in jail if what he said was not endorsed by President Yaameen himself.
