Prosecutor General (PG) office has sent the disobedience
case against Home Minister Umar Naseer to the police to complete a
“video analysis report.”
The case was withdrawn by the PG office for further analysis on the 19th
of November 2014 after the summary of the trial was read to the court.
According to reports, the case was sent back to the police on January 5.
According to an official from the PG Office, while Umar had been charged
with disobedience, that a video analysis report had not been conducted
so far and noted that an analysis report is required to prove the
credibility of a video being submitted to the court.
The official also revealed that the next step regarding the Home
Minister’s case will be decided after they receive the video analysis
report.
Naseer was accused of giving instructions at a rally on how to invade
the military headquarters using 50 ladders of 12 feet, and 2000
volunteers. He was addressing a crowd of anti-government protesters
during the last days of former President Mohamed Nasheed’s
administration.
Though Naseer was seen in a video clip making these comments, the
defense had argued that the audio and video of the clip does not match
and had asked for the video analysis report by the Police as well as the
Chain-of-Custody report. The State had replied to the request saying
all the procedures were completed before the video evidence was put
forward to the court.
