While jailed former President Mohamed Nasheed's
brother Dr. Ibrahim Nashid has signed the required document that allows
the former President to travel to the United Kingdom to undergo surgery,
a family member is being required to sign a second "hostage" document
as well.
Speaking to RaajjeMV, Hassan Latheef from Nasheed's legal team said that while Nasheed's brother has signed the required document, the Maldives Correctional Services (MCS) is forcing his client to sign an additional document which conditions one of his family member's to "island arrest" in Malé until Nasheed’s return from the UK.
Latheef said that his client refuses to sign the document , saying that he will not compromise someone else's safety.
Latheef said that according to the second document, that the family guarantor will be liable for criminal prosecution.
Revealing that he has signed a document agreeing to pass information on Nasheed's whereabouts while in the UK, Nashid said that the family has refused to sign the "hostage" document.
The government had, on Saturday, granted Nasheed permission to travel abroad to undergo surgery in the UK.
Revealing that her father was first told that there would be no conditions or agreements, Nasheed's daughter Meera Laila Nasheed said that he has been told that he could only go to the UK if he "agreed to sign that someone else will be responsible for him in the Maldives whilst he is in the UK." She said that this "is a ridiiculous idea" and that they both agreed that they will not compromise someone else's safety.
