Former President Mohamed Nasheed
had sought permission to go abroad for a surgery on his back,
but Correctional Service had denied the request insisting that the
surgery could be done in the Maldives. The authority had said it could
only allow Nasheed to travel abroad for medical treatment after
consultation with a specialist.
Home Minister Umar Naseer had said that the doctor had recommended a "L4-5 Microdicectory” for Nasheed. However, Umar also said the surgery is available in the Maldives.
The home minister was referring to a surgery called microdiscectomy.
Prisons chief Mohamed Husham told Haveeru on Thursday that privately run ADK Hospital is able to perform the surgery in two ways. Prison regulations only allow an inmate to be sent abroad for treatment unavailable locally, he added.
“So we don’t even have to file Nasheed’s case to our [medical] board,” Husham said.
Nasheed’s lawyers, however, reject the government’s claim.
Hassan Latheef, member of the former president’s legal team, said on Wednesday evening that the Correctional Service’s decision was against doctors’ recommendations. He also accused the government of failing to make proper arrangements at Maafushi prison for Nasheed to receive physiotherapy as recommended by the doctors.
