Lawyers announced Monday that they would take the
fingerprint of jailed opposition leader Mohamed Nasheed in a bid to
save him from being expelled from his Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP).
An amendment to the Political Party Act in August mandates all party membership forms to carry the fingerprint of the member.
Elections Commission has decided to void existing members without fingerprints on their respective membership form from January. The commission had given until 3pm Thursday for parties to obtain fingerprints of existing members.
The commission, however, is yet to enforce its decision.
Nasheed’s lawyer Hisaan Hussein told Haveeru that the home ministry had granted their request to take her client’s fingerprint. The former president would be presented with the form to put his fingerprint during a visit to the prison Monday afternoon. source- http://www.haveeru.com.mv/news/65320
