The government agreed to release imprisoned former President Mohamed
Nasheed on 26th July 2015, says opposition Maldivian Democratic Party
(MDP).
The opposition party made the comments in a statement issued on Thursday, revealing the details of government negotiations in mid-2015.
MDP said in the statement that the meetings initiated with MDP on the request of President Abdulla Yameen were held in two ways.
Whilst negotiations took place with Home Minister Umar Naseer, direct communication was made with Yameen through then-Tourism Minister Ahmed Adheeb.
The government agreed for Nasheed’s release after keeping him in house arrest for two days, extending the house arrest for eight weeks and commuting the sentence to house arrest.
“The government agreed to free President Mohamed Nasheed… to commute his prison term to permanent house arrest and to free him on 26th July 2015.”
According to MDP, Nasheed was transferred to house arrest to pave way for easy arrangements while MDP parliamentary group leader Ibrahim ‘Ibu’ Mohamed Solih was informed that a document confirming decision will be sent to him.
Nasheed realized of the government decision not to implement the document when Maldives Correctional Service (MCS) officials went to collect him to take him back to prison.
“When he was taken to jail, the government had been implementing the document commuting the sentence to house issued on 19th July 2015 for five days.”
MDP revealed the party’s opinion that the document is authentic as it is similar to the earlier provided documents.
“As a result, we believe President Mohamed Nasheed is being held in prison arbitrarily since 23rd August 2015.”
The statement further said that government made requests from the opposition to cooperate in implementing the economic agenda and bring changes to the political environment.
The opposition was also conditioned to stop street protests and not to retort to the government media response over Nasheed’s case lodged at the UN Working Group.
“Government proposed a request to withdraw Nasheed’s case lodged at the UN Working Group.”
MDP demands for the political negotiations were the immediate release of Nasheed, release of all political prisoners and reform the judiciary.
“A draft copy of the reforms needed to be brought to the judiciary was shared with the government.”
