Government agrees to lift the conditions on Nasheed's release for surgery
Government has agreed to lift the conditions imposed on former President Mohamed Nasheed's temporary release for surgery.
The former President had, yesterday, cancelled his medical trip to the United Kingdom, after Maldives Correctional Service insisted he must sign a document agreeing that a member of his family would remain confined to capital city Male’ until his return to Maldives.
Since the Government-imposed condition would make the family member liable to prosecution, Nasheed had refused to sign the agreement, forgoing the opportunity to travel abroad.
Apart from this, in a press conference held on Sunday, Nasheed’s legal team noted that although the Home Minister had announced a 30-day time frame for Nasheed’s trip, the Government had initially agreed to grant him release without the imposition of a deadline.
In an unexpected turn of events, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, had, on Saturday, revealed its decision to grant permission to Nasheed to travel abroad for medical treatment.
Sri Lanka's the Sunday Times reported that Nasheed's medical trip deal was brokered by the Sri Lankan government.
According to sources, the former President will be leaving to the United Kingdom today.
