Former Vice President Ahmed Adheeb has been brought to the Civil Court for a hearing of the case submitted by his family “seeking visitation rights in a fair manner”.
The court had accepted the case on January 4, 2016.
According to a statement released on December 27, 2015 by Adheeb’s
lawyer Hussain Shameem, the police had violated Articles 17 and 20 of
the Constitution as well as Articles 34 of the Police Regulation by
denying his client the right to family visitation.
The statement further noted that Maldives Police Service’s actions were in contravention of a number of international treaties signed by the country, including Article 10 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and Article 14 of the International Covenant on the Civil and Political Rights.
Adheeb’s legal team had earlier called on the relevant authorities to look into the proceedings of their client’s case held in violation of a number of laws.
While Adheeb was initially arrested for “masterminding the assassination
attempt against President Yaameen, the State has charged him with a
number of crimes, including the misuse of official position, corruption,
attempted bribery and even terrorism.
