Imprisoned former President Mohamed Nasheed has said he wants to return
to a free Maldives and he has to contest in the upcoming presidential
election.
In an interview with CNN, Nasheed said he wants to return to a Maldives where the people have the freedom of expression and assembly.
When questioned whether he plans to return to the Maldives, Nasheed said he was discussing with his lawyers on the matter.
Nasheed said he it was his obligation to contest in the presidential election for the people of Maldives.
“I believe that it is my obligation to contest in the election. There are unfinished things that we started. These things must be completed.”

Lawyer Amal Clooney stated that the Maldives government sees Nasheed as an enemy because his is a potential rival who can win the election.
