A document authorizing imprisoned former President Mohamed Nasheed’s jail term to be commuted to house arrest issued by Maldives Correctional Service (MCS) is a valid document, former Vice President Ahmed Adheeb has said.
Citing Adheeb, his lawyer Hussein Shameem tweeted that a valid document was handed over to Nasheed to commute his 13 years prison term to house arrest.
“President Yameen knows that the document is valid, but he decided to reconsider the decision to transfer Nasheed to house arrest and to keep him in prison.”
In a statement issued on Monday, Adheeb’s legal team informed that President Yameen ordered MCS to issue a document to Nasheed, on
the government’s decision to put him under permanent house arrest.
“Vice President claims it is not his decision to put Nasheed back in prison after issuing a valid document assuring him of permanent house arrest. The President ordered Maldives Correctional Service to issue the document to implement a government decision.”
According to the statement, the document is legally binding as it fulfill all the criterions in an official government document while Adheeb denies any involvement in questioning about its validity.
“Vice President believes the government is trying to politically weaken him by using the opportunity to blame him over the President’s decision to put Nasheed back in prison. However, the decision to take Nasheed back to prison does not have Vice President’s involvement in any way. Vice President believes it is an unjust policy of the government to blame him over all government decisions that dissatisfies the public.”
Meanwhile, Nasheed’s lawyers revealed that the MCS document handed over to Nasheed has the same stamp used by the MCS on earlier issued documents.
His legal team sent the document in question and three more documents abroad for forensic analysis. The three documents were issued separately on 21st June 2015, on 21st June 2015 to Nasheed’s wife Laila Ali and on 23rd June 2015 to put Nasheed under house arrest for eight weeks.
Forensic analysis proves that all four documents were issued from the same place and it is a blatant lie to accuse Nasheed of presenting a forged document, lawyer Hassan Latheef said.
He said the stamp of MCS is not accessible to Nasheed, his family or legal team and they do not have the capability to create such a document.
On 12th November 2015, the original copy of the document in question was handed over to the police after conducting a thorough forensic analysis.
Whilst police are investigating the matter, Nasheed’s legal team has requested to expedite the investigation.
Meanwhile, MCS says the document in question was not issued by the authority. The case was first reported to police by MCS.
The document issued on 19th July 2015 has the official number given to administrative documents. The document was sent from the MCS executive section.
