“SC should consider UN opinion in Nasheed’s appeal case”

The government has announced that a key point which must be considered in the appeal case of imprisoned former President Mohamed Nasheed is the decision by the UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detention.

In a statement welcoming Nasheed’s decision to appeal his 13 year prison sentence, foreign ministry said the government had always wanted to address the concerns within the case through the legal process.

The statement noted that Nasheed was never obstructed to go for an appeal case, but the government has encouraged “seeking to argue his complaints before the appropriate judicial body.”

“The Government of Maldives respects the rule of law, and reaffirms the position that its judiciary is fully independent and impartial. The fact that the former President is now seeking to file an appeal reaffirms this position.”
