The family of imprisoned former President Mohamed Nasheed has requested permission to take him abroad for a backbone surgery.
At a news conference on Monday, lawyer Hisaan Hussein said Nasheed was facing back injuries as he was beaten up during previous occasions in jail and in the stages to imprison him this year, especially in front of the Criminal Court.
Hisaan said the surgery can be done in two ways, and although it can be done in the country doctors had recommended doing a microdiscectomy abroad as it might be risky.
“Microdiscectomy surgery is a new technology. It cannot be conducted here. So doctors have recommended doing the surgery abroad. Nasheed’s family has made a request at the Home Ministry.”
Nasheed’s lawyers said they have not yet started making arrangements to transfer him abroad although the Home Ministry had responded that the permission to go abroad will be provided as per regulations.
“We don’t know whether Nasheed will be permitted by the board without consulting a doctor in IGMH. Home Ministry has not told us how to proceed in the matter. So we have many concerns about the matter.”
