Maldives Correctional Services has confirmed that
no decision has been made regarding former President Nasheed’s medical
case thus far.
When contacted by RaajjeMV regarding media reports suggesting MCS had denied the former President the permission to travel abroad for treatment, Information Officer Moosa Rameez said that despite having learnt Nasheed’s surgery can be performed in Maldives, the MCS Medical Board had not reached a final decision.
“We have received assurances from the hospital that Nasheed’s surgery can be performed here in Maldives. But there is a special medical board making decisions on such matters. They have not reached a conclusion yet”, he added.
Nasheed was brought to ADK Hospital in Male’ for a consultation with a neurologist, yesterday.
The Correctional Service had earlier said that it will take into consideration the jailed former President Nasheed’s wish”even if his surgery can be performed in the Maldives”.
Speaking to RaajjeMV, Commissioner of Prions Mohamed Husham said that doctors at ADK Hospital had given two options for Nasheed’s surgery: a minimally invasive method called the ‘keyhole surgery’ or the ‘open surgery’ method, and highlighted that the Correctional Service had now received assurance that both methods can be performed in the Maldives.
He, however, noted the Correctional Service had not received “an official word” regarding the surgery from Indhira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) yet.
“Regardless of what the doctors say, the final decision will be for the former President to make, isn’t it?”, Husham told RaajjeMV.
He further stated that following the medical consultation, the orthopaedist Dr.Yousuf Shah had suggested the former President follow the direct recommendations of the surgeon who will be performing the operation.
The Commissioner of Prisons insisted the Correctional Service will be able to make a final decision on the former President’s request to go abroad for treatment as soon as they conclude their report on ADK’s capacity to perform the surgery.
