Ministry of Home Affairs has revealed that former
President Mohamed Nasheed's legal counsel will be allowed to meet with
their client until the conclusion of his appeal case at the Supreme
Court.
The Ministry made the announcement via twitter and noted that "Minister Umar Naseer has made arrangements for President Nasheed's legal team to meet with him on a daily basis until the end of this appeal case at Supreme Court."
The Home Minister's decision comes hours after Nasheed's legal counsel revealed that they wanted to spend more time with him to to prepare the documents for the Supreme Court appeal hearing.
They had emphasized that they wanted to present the case at the Supreme Court as soon as possible and requested for additional time.
Nasheed's legal team announced his decision to appeal his 13-year jail sentence at the Supreme Court and emphasized that this “is not an admission of guilt.”
The government had, on Monday, welcomed former President Mohamed Nasheed's decision and said that "reaffirms that the Government of Maldives respects the rule of law, and reaffirms the position that its judiciary is fully independent and impartial."
Nasheed's fast tracked trial which lasted 19 days was criticized by the United Nations Human Rights Council as a “hasty and apparently unfair” trial that made a "mockery of the country's own constitution." Amnesty International called the trial a "travesty of justice", while the US Secretary of State John Kerry, during a visit to Sri Lanka said that Nasheed was “imprisoned without due process.”
Nasheed had, in April, lodged a petition at the UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detention asking for urgent action and formal request for an opinion of the Working Group.
While the government has rejected the Working Group's ruling that Nasheed's imprisonment was arbitrary and unlawful, the Ministry, in its statement today said that "the Government has maintained the position that the opinion of the UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detention is one that should be considered by the Supreme Court. This will now be done given that the Court has accepted the appeal already filed by the Prosecutor General, with substantive arguments to be heard at a later date."
