Nasheed receives medical treatment as and when required: Umar

Minister of Home Affairs Umar Naseer has said that jailed former President Mohamed Nasheed "receives medical treatment as and when such treatments are required."

According to a statement released by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Naseer had said that “contrary to claims by President Nasheed’s lawyers, the doctors who have been consulted, have not said that Nasheed’s condition is life threatening. As per the standard operational protocol at the Correctional Service, whenever Nasheed requested for medical treatment, the necessary treatments have been provided without any hindrance or unnecessary delays.”

"Standard procedure applied in treating inmates in prisons in the Maldives is that a person can be considered for sending overseas for medical treatment when the treatment or the required laboratory examination is not available in the Maldives. In the case of Mr Nasheed, the required treatment and laboratory examination facilities are available in the Maldives. The Correctional Service has obtained opinions from separate doctors on this and they both have come to the same conclusion." said the Home Minister.

Noting Nasheed’s decision to appeal the jail sentence at the Supreme Court of the Maldives, the statement also noted that "this is the first time that Nasheed had announced his intention to appeal the case, and that the Government of Maldives has welcomed the decision."

Naseer's comments come after Nasheed's international legal team member Jared Genser revealed that parts of former President Nasheed’s body are numb due to “a major spinal injury exacerbated by the lack of appropriate medical care."

Genser had, an article published on the Washington Post, said that “the former President could perish in his island prison” if he is not allowed to leave abroad for the specialist surgery soon.

Genser had further stated that President Yaameen’s refusal to let the former President leave for treatment shows he was “content to let Nasheed die”.

According to Commissioner of Prisons, Mohamed Husham, doctors have given two options for Nasheed’s surgery: a minimally invasive method called the ‘keyhole surgery’ or the ‘open surgery’ method, and since the recommendation was "not conclusive", the Correctional Service has decided to seek a second opinion from a doctor at IGMH— the only government hospital in the capital city.

As a neurologist is currently unavailable, the former President has been shown to Dr.Shaan, an orthopaedist.

The Correctional Board will be making a decision on Nasheed’s medical case after seeking a second opinion on the matter.

Former President Nasheed’s Office had recently expressed concern after Minister of Home Affairs Umar Naseer publicised Nasheed’s medical diagnosis via Twitter.

Naseer had tweeted that the doctor had recommended Nasheed to undergo a micro-discectomy of the L4-5 and said “the procedure is available in the Maldives”.

Over the past couple of months, Nasheed’s family has repeatedly claimed that the State was denying him medical assistance.

Back in November, MP for Galolhu Uthuru, Eva Abdulla said that President Nasheed was "still being denied medical attention, denied exercise and that there is a “spotlight still on his cell” day in and day out.”
