Former President Mohamed Nasheed has been brought to Indhira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) after Maldives Correctional Services claimed that his consultation had been cancelled.

This morning, Commissioner of Prisons, Mohamed Husham, said that the former President’s medical consultation had been cancelled after the orthopaedist, Dr.Shaan, called in sick.

Speaking to RaajjeMV, Husham said that doctors at ADK Hospital had given two options for Nasheed’s surgery: a minimally invasive method called the ‘keyhole surgery’ or the ‘open surgery’ method, and since the recommendation was "not conclusive", the Correctional Service had decided to seek a second opinion from a doctor at IGMH— the only government hospital in the capital city.

As a neurologist is currently unavailable, the former President has been shown to Dr.Shaan, an orthopaedist.

The Correctional Board will be making a decision on Nasheed’s medical case after seeking a second opinion on the matter.

Former President Nasheed’s Office had recently expressed concern after Minister of Home Affairs Umar Naseer publicised Nasheed’s medical diagnosis via Twitter.

Citing Article 24 of the Constitution, the Office said that Article 24 ensures the right of privacy between Nasheed and his doctors.

According to Naseer, the doctor had recommended Nasheed to undergo a micro-discectomy of the L4-5 and said “the procedure is available in the Maldives”.

Over the past couple of months, Nasheed’s family have repeatedly claimed that the State was denying him medical assistance.

Back in November, MP for Galolhu Uthuru, Eva Abdulla said that President Nasheed was "still being denied medical attention, denied exercise and that there is a “spotlight still on his cell” day in and day out.”
