An independent inquiry has been tasked with investigating serious
accusations against President Abdulla Yameen, opposition Maldivian
Democratic Party (MDP) Chairperson Ali Waheed has said.
Speaking on a talk show on opposition aligned Raajje TV on Sunday night, Ali Waheed who is in self-exile in the UK said there were serious allegations and clear evidence against Yameen and his wife in corruption and other major crimes.
“I want to say that we now have hundreds of evidence against President Yameen. We have handed over this evidence to an independent inquiry.”
Ali Waheed accused Yameen and his wife of being involved with corruption at Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC).
He said a USD 500,000 cheque was deposited into Yameen’s personal account and the money was taken from the funds embezzled from MMPRC.
According to him, the financial transactions involving corruption was taking place through Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA).
Speaking on the talk show via Skype, Ali Waheed shared details about the recent financial assistance provided by Saudi Arabia.
President’s Office was unavailable for comments as Spokesperson Ibrahim Muaz Ali did not respond to calls.
